What if our product does not have a GTIN?

What to do if your product does not have a Global Trade Item Number.

Not all products have a GTIN, or Global Trade Item Number.

GTINs are commonly used for retail products with barcode-based product identification, but some products or supplier categories may not use them.

Examples may include:

  • unpacked or fresh products
  • certain non-retail or non-consumer goods
  • products that have not yet received a GTIN assignment

If a GTIN is not available:

  • check whether the field is marked as required or optional
  • provide other available product identification data where possible
  • complete the remaining requested product data normally

If you are unsure whether a GTIN should exist for your product, check with your organisation’s GS1, product master data, packaging or product contact person.
